Not Getting Job Interviews Heres What to Do

Not Getting Job Interviews Here’s What to Do Not Getting Job Interviews Here’s What to Do 26When you’re job searching, it can feel like you’re sending out job applications into a big, bottomless void. That’s why one of the biggest goals that each and every job seeker has (apart from getting hired for a job, of course) is to get a callback for a job interview. But if you’re churning out job application after job application without getting job interviews, here’s what you need to do. Follow up. By far, one of the best ways to snag a chance at a job interview is by following up. In your cover letter, you can politely write that you plan to follow up on your job application to see if the hiring manager has any questions. It’s perfectly acceptable to email the hiring manager a week or so after you’ve sent in your job application. This is important for two reasons: first, it ensures that the hiring manager actually did receive your job application. If he receives your follow-up email, he might realize that he never got your job application to begin with. Secondly, and more importantly, following up shows your genuine interest in the job, which will make you stand out in the hiring manager’s mind. Feel your potential boss’ pain. Getting job interviews is all about showing employers that you can help them. Inherently, hiring managers always have a problem. What is it? Well, in the Forbes.com article, “How to Get the Job Interview,” writer Liz Ryan suggests that you feel your potential boss’ pain by writing a “Pain Letter.” In this letter, which is essentially your cover letter, you address what you perceive to be his biggest problem at work. Maybe it’s a weak social media presence. Maybe it’s updating certain systems to be more modern. You’ll have to do some digging to ascertain what the issue is, but bring up what the problem might be, and how you would solve it. Use examples from your previous work experiences in which you solved similar issues to strengthen your point. Network in a new way. Sure, you have professional accounts on all the social media channels and are engaging online. But that’s not enough if you want to get your foot in the door at your dream company. Ryan suggests doing a search to find people on LinkedIn who are in the same industry as you and find out who they’re working for. She calls the search “Who’s Around” because it will reveal to you potential employers in your area who are employing people in the same industry as you, doing the same work as you. By having this info of local employers, you can reach out to them directly. Or, you can connect with those same people on LinkedIn and forge connections that can not only broaden your network, but hopefully help you get a job interview with one of these organizations. It can be super frustrating when employers dont respond to job applications. Try some of these techniques as another way to increase your arsenal of job searching tips, and watch the job interviews come flooding in!
